Artist's Comments

Project 2 for Julie's Digital Design Issues class.
"Make 4 playing cards out of a fairy- or folk-tale."

I chose the Russian folktale "The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship."
I used to watch the PBS claymation movie all the time as a kid and downloaded the file and bought the DVD just because I was suddenly reminded of it.
Such a great fairytale- definitely my favorite.
It embodies the "hero's journey" perfectly and it's definitely one of the most complicated fairytales ever told.
If you haven't heard of it, go find it now.

Here's an abridged version for the sake of viewing these cards:
In the story, the hero goes on a journey to find a flying ship, which the Tsar decreed would be the price of his daughter's hand in marriage.
On his journey, the hero comes across a forest spirit who gives him a flying ship and tells him that in exchange he must give a ride to whoever asks.
He comes across several travelers who join him, including a forester with a bundle of magic twigs.
Upon arriving at the castle, the Tsar refuses to give his daughter's hand in marriage because they are peasants, and instead gives them impossible task after impossible task to complete.
With each task, the various travelers use their special abilities to accomplish them and the Tsar gives them one final task: to raise an army to rule a kingdom by the very next day.
The forester plants his twigs in the ground and overnight they sprout into a whole army to rival that of the Tsar's.

Here we have the flippable Jack of Hearts.

Critiques

:iconariadnearca:
(I'll just critique all four pieces on here, rather than split them all up...)

The texture works brilliantly, as does the limited palette of pinks, reds and yellows. The splash at the top-right and bottom-left corners balances it out nicely... but does seem a little out of place next to the lovely art noveau style of the centrepiece...? Eh. I don't know. It would probably distract the eye from the centrepiece if it was more detailed, so feel free to ignore that part. ^^;

I like how you've drawn the characters on the K/Q/J cards wearing similar clothing on both sides, and the lineart is wonderfully smooth and appealing. Your drawing style works great when merged with Art Noveau.

There are just one or two of jarring notes. The 'regal' Queen's arm stands out in particular - I think it's because you show the elbow, rather than letting the forearm come smoothly out of the heart as you do elsewhere.

Looking at them as a set, there's also a few pattern breaks, but this is only a very minor quibble - the 'normal' Queen holds the sceptre rather than the 'regal' one, and the positions of the 'regal' and 'normal' King are swapped compared to the other two. But those, as I said, are only minor things, and I'd probably let them be. :D

As for the 8, the design is interesting, there's no problem with the art and I can't really compare it to the other cards, as the K/Q/J are always set apart.

(However, you could think about making that flippable too as a sort of side experiment? It's really not necessary at all, but you've got such an interesting monster to play with, I'm sure you could find some way to make that work... but then again, lots of extra effort, and it's fine the way it is. :XD:).

Anyway! Hope this was helpful. Excellent work!

I did this once, but it looks totaly diffrent from yours, the queen of hearts is hard to draw when you do the double sided thing, but it looks very cool
